ONE DEVICE, TWO STANDARDS

At SCST we use a Wessex Pendulum Skid Tester.
What is it? Well, in its simplest for a pendulum is swung to make contact over the floor to measure the quantity of resistance on the surface. The remaining momentum in the pendulum is then measured in the form of a British Pendulum Number(BPN). We do this multiple times in multiple areas, focusing on high foot traffic areas. Theses readings are complied to an average BPN for measured surface.

There are two standards used when testing slip resistance on surfaces.

AUSTRALIAN STANDARD 4586-2013

SLIP RESISTANCE CLASSIFICATION OF
NEW PEDESTRIAN SURFACE MATERIALS

This standard comes into effect when a surface has been installed/resurfaced and has not yet been subject to wear and or contamination.

The 4586-2013 standard allows for a classification (P Value) of the surface to be given to be given to the builder/end user.

The P Value ensures that surface is compliant in relation to the intended work to be undertaken, or to the specific requirements of the building certifier.

Surfaces that commonly require or benefit from this type of service include:

Newly built Commercial and Residential Buildings

New flooring Surfaces ready for handover

Housing, Hospitality Fit outs and offices

AUSTRALIAN STANDARD 4663-2013

SLIP RESISTANCE CLASSIFICATION OF
EXISTING PEDESTRIAN SURFACE MATERIALS

This standard comes into effect when a surface has been installed/resurfaced and has not yet been subject to wear and or contamination.

The 4586-2013 standard allows for a classification (P Value) of the surface to be given to be given to the builder/end user.

The P Value ensures that surface is compliant in relation to the intended work to be undertaken, or to the specific requirements of the building certifier.

Surfaces that commonly require or benefit from this type of service include:

Commercial and Residential Buildings including Shopping Centres, Medical Centres and Holiday/ Residential Buildings

Commercial and Private vessels

Housing, Hospitality and offices
